Electric Oven Usage Guide
General tips for getting the best from your electric oven and avoiding common faults, from Braintree Appliance Repairs.
Getting the best from your electric oven
- Always preheat your oven before cooking — putting food into a cold oven affects cooking times and results, and can make you think the oven isn't heating properly when it just needs more time.
- Use an oven thermometer occasionally to check the internal temperature matches the dial — thermostats can drift over time and cause under- or over-cooking.
- Clean spills as soon as the oven has cooled — baked-on grease and food residue is harder to remove and can affect the door seal and fan operation over time.
- Check the door seal periodically for damage or wear — a poor seal lets heat escape, increases cooking times, and drives up energy use.
- Avoid lining the base of the oven with foil — it can block vents, reflect heat onto the elements, and in some ovens will void the manufacturer's warranty.
- If your oven has a self-clean or pyrolytic function, follow the manufacturer's guidance on how often to use it — overuse can shorten the life of the element and seals.
Safety first
If your oven is producing a burning smell that isn't from food, tripping your electrics, or the door won't close/lock properly, stop using it and call us. Never attempt to repair a heating element or wiring yourself.
If a fault persists after checking the above, it's usually down to a worn part rather than something you can fix at home — see Electric Oven Repairs.
